Sorry for the lazy post, I promise I squinted long and hard for a good 4 seconds at the forum before asking:

Has there been any general consensus or open sourced design for airsoft weapons? Or are most competitors still using their own custom designs?

Was floating around the idea of designing something that can easily be built around a standard AEG mechbox + printed parts for hopper/mag.

Also, any good sources for barrels?

jwatte had a design built around a fairly standard AEG on Shapeways, but not sure it is still available from there. It also had a tiny hopper stirring motor and slot for an optointerrupter to verify something about the state of the loading/firing action. Thinking the design was able to accommodate any barrel/hopup. Given my proximity, Airsoft Atlanta and McMaster would be my goto sources for barrels.

edit: yep, still available.

edit edit: not universal barrel mount - designed for Crosman Defender auto-gun barrel/hop-up

I think it's still available. I think I also marked the files as downloadable if you want them.
They mate to a 1.5" tube for magazine, Pololu micro gearmotor for agitator, and the standard AEG form factor.
They also mate to the hop-up and barrel from the $18 "defender" gun from Amazon. Scrap the gun, keep the barrel/hop-up...

That being said, the gun will dry-fire every once in a while. The spring loaded flexible channel mechanism built by the R-Team folks seems more robust, albeit a bit more work to put together.
