I love linkages! These are too cool.
Never disparage 'old school', it is 'old' and still valid because it works. Clever use of linkages/gears/pulleys can do some amazing things. I paid almost $75 for a text on linkages, specifically 4-bar linkages. It is worth every penny, though it is still somewhat inscrutable.
