What does that mean?
What are the different group names?
How do you advance from one name to another?

DresnerRobotics

Post count.

ps: plusone!

Alex
02-01-2008, 08:06 PM
Yep.

Everyone starts out as an Abacus. Then after so many posts their title goes up.

5 posts => Relay
15 posts => Vacuum Tube
25 posts => Transistor
50 posts => Optical Transistor
75 posts => Quantum Gate
100 posts => Neuron

Once we get a little larger I'll be adding on to this, but I'm not sure what would come after Neuron... Thoughts?

You can also add to user's reputation. Basically it's a way of showing other members that a particular member knows their stuff, and also good way to say "thanks". To add to a users reputation just click that little balance scale icon just to the right of every post number.

All I can say is 1000+ postcount needs to be: Skynet

;)

Photon might be good after neuron, and Qubit somewhere between there and skynet :p

of course, optical transistor and quantum gate are already there. Maybe I should read a little more closely next time.

I know it's already been taken, but...

"Flux capacitor"?

Skynet or SkyNET was a good one! ;)

Other suggestions: "Integrated Curcuit" (before Quantum gait), "T-800" or "T-1000" LOL, "Borg" or "Cyborg".

Here's what I was thinking, we could do 3 categories of phases as people "evolve" :) We could do 5 of each for a total of 15. (We will readjust the post counts of course)

1) logic gates etc
2) Processors
3) Systems / AI

logic gates etc
5 posts => Relay
15 posts => Vacuum Tube
25 posts => Transistor
50 posts => Optical Transistor
75 posts => Quantum Gate
100 posts => Neuron

Processors (these will be poor examples)
basic stampPentium
quad core
neural network

Systems / AI
Johnny 5
HAL
SkyNet!

I agree Skynet is perfect for the top dog slot. We need help for the filling in the gaps correctly.
More suggestions????

DresnerRobotics
02-04-2008, 04:12 PM
I'm insulted that HAL is higher then Johnny 5! While naive- he did see Ally Sheedy naked (who was hot back in the day), learned how to dance disco, and was equipped with a laser beam that could blow up a tank.

All HAL did was take cheapshots at astronauts :p

Then again, I might be a bit biased...

Matt

Okay, that's 1 vote for a reordering of the 3rd category...

LOL

Alex

Come on guys! We can't let this thread die out. I'm not a hardware guru, but I know many of you here are. What is the history on the evolution of processors? What should we have in our list for processors?

BTW, I agree that Johnny5 should be higher than HAL:)

ps: feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on any of these, I tried to do them by chronological order.

Dave

Damn, Andrew. Had a bit of spare time today?
(That's a really good list, BTW.)

Alex
02-07-2008, 05:05 PM
Hey man, since when is a Commodore 64, Apple II, etc a processor? Still a great list indeed Andrew, thanks!

Now what we need is a list of theoretical processors types for the future;)

DresnerRobotics
02-07-2008, 05:10 PM
Dave- I'm a network admin, you think we actually do anything during the day? Ha!

Alex- I thought the same thing, but the thing is, nobody will recognize the processors model #s that were in a commodore or apple. I picked names for computers and processors that people will most identify with.

For example, only one processor type for a commodore 64, however there are plenty of models of computers that have Intel Pentium 4s. Consider it a hybrid list for the masses :p

Dave
02-07-2008, 05:31 PM
I am in favor of this hybrid list for the masses; but you'll have to add some more classic vacuum tube beasts, like EDVAC and ENIAC, to keep me happy.

DresnerRobotics
02-07-2008, 05:42 PM
List would've been double that size had I concentrated on pre-microprocessor. I can only slack SO much at work ;) Feel free to fill in the gaps however!

Ahhhh, the Apple //c - my very first computer :-)

The built in 80-column card, the 128 KB of RAM, the extra instructions on the 65C02 (branch always, anyone?). I spent a zillion hours teaching myself to program on my //c in the early 80's...

I've been meaning to add to this thread for a few days now. What I was thinking of the microprocessor categories as basically the "categories" not the actual branded types (architectures?).

I'm totally out of my league here, so bear with me:D

Things like:

4bit
8bit
16bit
32bit
64bit
multi-core

and so on... I'd like to see the "futuristic microprocessors" listed here as well but have no clue what scientists are up to in this area... It's definitely not my field. Isn't an optical, neural & organic microprocessor somewhere in here too?

JonHylands
02-13-2008, 10:19 AM
I thought it had been mentioned already, but it doesn't look like it...

positronic core has to be at the top of the list...

Eh...to be honest that would be sort of bland in my opinion, would certainly be simpler though.

Alex

positronic core has to be at the top of the list...

? care to explain? I did a quick Google, but found nothing:(

to be honest that would be sort of bland in my opinion,

bland yes, but functional. Not sure of the order, but I could even go something like:

bit
multi-core
optical
neural
organic

positronic?

I'm just not a fan of the branding aspect in the microprocessors. Going that direction could make the list WAY too huge and difficult to nail down the right ones not to mention subjective. ie, What is faster/better AMD or Intel?

DresnerRobotics
02-13-2008, 11:00 AM
The list I created was sorted roughly by chronological order, not necessarily performance.

Hey man! I'm still waiting on all of you to decide what to go with;) It only takes me 5 minutes to add these and update the users in the database.

What does everyone think of this:

bit processor
multi-core processor
optical processor
quantum processor
organic processor
positronic brain

If everyone's cool with these, I'll add them tomorrow, just everyone give it a thumbs up/down. If you give it a thumbs down, then explain what you'd like to see. I just want to avoid "branding"

Now, the next section we need to work on is our actual AI robots that we started working on at the beginning of this thread.

Hal
Johnny 5
Skynet

We need some more bots in here though! The order can always be voted on, but I think we all agree that Skynet is at the top. I'm putting that vote count up HIGH, so when someone sees another member with "Skynet" title, everyone knows that member is a TR Community fanatic:D

Sounds good to me, maybe instead of 'bit processors' use your old suggestion:

4bit
8bit
16bit
32bit
64bit
multi-core

etc.

For robots we could always use some terminator models to thicken it up a bit. I'd think the order would go as follows:

Hero-1
AIBO
Asimo
HAL
Johnny 5
T-1
T-70
T-600
T-800
T-888
T-1000
T-X
TOK715
Skynet

Where are some of the Matrix bots/ binary life forms? Sentinals, Agent Smith...

Alex I'll help you nail it down tomorrow.

Alex
02-26-2008, 02:53 PM
Ok everyone.... Here are the final additions to the User Titles.

175 => Bit Processor
250 => Multi-Core Processor
325 => Optical Processor
400 => Quantum Processor
475 => Positronic Brain
650 => HAL
825 => Johnny-5
1000 => T-1000
2500 => Agent Smith
5000 => Skynet
10000 => The Matrix

I just updated the database so you should see them now:)

Yes, we totally spaced out and forgot The Matrix. Now before everyone starts reaming me... Sure Skynet was some scary shit, wiping most of the civilized world, built robots, etc. but The Matrix not only built robots in the real world, but is an entire virtual world in itself.

DresnerRobotics

What does everyone think of this:

bit processor
4-Bit Processor (ala the Intel 4004)
8-Bit Processor (ala the Intel 8008, 8080, etc)
16-bit (I avoided word processor) :D Processor
32-bit Processor
64-bit Processor
Dual-Core Processor
Quad-Core Processor

multi-core processor
Nano-Core (Smaller is usually faster)
Pico-Core
Optical Link
Optical Core
Optical Processor (moved from where you have it)
Neuron
Neural Processor
Neural Net

organic processor
I don't really care for this one, since we are talking something that is part of or potentially part of a computer. Otherwise we move into the realm of the Cyborg.

Quantum Link
Quantum Node

quantum processor

Positronic Pathway (instead of Positronic Link)
Positronic Node
Positronic Processor
Positronic Net

positronic brain

Well, there is my dime's worth (inflation) for now. :)

Data (Star Trek: TNG)

Hal

What about robots on TV?
Ok, I cheated and used the internet but....

There is a distinct lack of Johnny 5/Short Circuit in your list. I am offended :P

Johnny 5 has to be in the robot list, for sure. It's mandatory! :happy: I really want to see yours perform sometime.

I'll be at the next PARTS meeting, Johnny 5 will be with me, and functioning at about 90%. I'm working on dealing with hard drive vibration dampening, so I'm not driving him around too much for the time being until I get that situated... and his speakers are currently external since a recent upgrade. That said I've been working with Roborealm quite a bit lately and have some new tricks up my sleeve.

Excellent! I am going to be there also, with W.A.L.T.E.R. in tow. I found a box big enough to transport him in. I don't think he's going to be operational by then though. You will at least be able to see him with the new decks I designed and had made as well as how I have mounted sensors and the arm. :happy: I still need three servos for the arm though. I just hope I can transport him safely on buses and MAX.

Very cool! I really wish there was a version of RoboRealm for Linux/UNIX. The RoboRealm folks would like to do it, but there is some considerations I don't fully understand - maybe lack of demand is one.

I'm considering seeing if I can write some software that works similar to Lynxmotion's SEQ, PowerPod (at some point, when I get an Octapod built), and other stuff. Mine would be Open Source and work for Linux/Unix. I think I'd use the QT4 libraries so it could also be made to work under Windows.

We really need some good software like these for Robotics that works in Linux and Unix. These versions could have nice Gnome and KDE user interfaces.

TV shows... but I agree, so maybe a meld of famous TV robots and Movie robots... because M5 from star trek and the robot from Lost in Space have to be on any list....:veryhappy:

Mabee trossen can give a prize for a picture of the oldest working computer owned by a menber of this form?
Sorry - I'd win that, unless someone has a working ENIAC. I have one of the largest private collections of computers 1970-1989, although I have some hardware a little older that fell in my lap. How far back do you want to go, and do you want micro,mini, super mini, mainframe, or super?

The IMSAI I built still runs fine to this day. My Dynabyte is still running but the Sierra Systems may predate it a tad, or we can get even more esoteric and go for the PDP8, or even more esoteric with the VT78. ;)
