View Full Version : [Discussion] New audio/video embedding feature added - I NEED YOUR OPINION!!

Hi everyone!

Recently, I found a really cool video embedding feature that I wanted to run past all of you and see what the TRC thought of it:)

It's super easy to use and supports video embedding from many different sites (not just You Tube).

So far, the list is:

apple
espn
metacafe
spikedhumor
vimeo
break
filecabi
jumpcut
myspace
porkolt
stage6 [deleted]
xtube [deleted]
collegehumor
godtube [deleted]
megarotic [deleted]
myspacetv
pornotube [deleted] - Thanks Ty!
veoh
yahoo
dailymotion
google
megavideo
photobucket-inwork
sevenload
viddler
youtubeand growing.

Anyways, it's really easy to use, all you need is the BBCode "media". If you are unfamilar with what BBCode tags are, go here (http://forums.trossenrobotics.com/misc.php?do=bbcode).

To use this particular BBCode, just take the full URL of your video and wrap it in the media BBCode tag :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_gto3YIpT0

Resulting in:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_gto3YIpT0We may eventually turn this into a button that you can use in the toolbox in a post, but for now we're sticking with the BBCode. Now, here's where all of you come in. I would love it if everyone in the TRC could help out here and test out this feature. Only test this out in this thread though, because we haven't decided if we're going to keep it. I'd hate to see someone using this feature all over the TRC only for us to pull it and their videos don't come up anymore.

We want to know all your opinions! Good, Bad, everything:)

Of course with everything new there may be a few bugs, so if you find those, be sure to mention it as well!

hey, I just listed all of the videos from the developer of this system. I had no say in it;) Good catch though! I'm goin to have to remove that one from the list.

This sounds like it would be a really good idea.

The problem I have with videos is I don't get sound from many that I know have sound when I am in Linux (most of the time). I hate having to reboot into Windows just to see and hear some cool videos. Even with some YouTube (http://www.youtube.com) videos that I know have sound, I don't get it when in Linux, but others I do and I don't know why that is.

Guess you should be using Windows more often then, huh, j/k;)

Seriously though Dale, if you could check this feature out for me and let me know what you think, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I have been thinking about adding some early development videos of W.A.L.T.E.R. to my thread about him, just to show everyone where he has come from. That would be good, but these are all on YouTube so might not make the greatest test. I will try uploading some to other sources your plugin supports.

You don't want xtube or stage6 (shutdown) either.

I think this is Alex's sneaky way of trying to get us to post pr0n and then get banned.

I'm onto you Alex!

btw: megarotic looks questionable too. I'm not going to find out as I'm at work though

Dammit! You mad me;)

Thanks guys!, I'll figure out how to remove xtube, stage6 and megarotica. Keep the comments coming!

Can an arbitrary streaming site be used, or does it have to be configured administratively? And can I get my 2k3 video streaming servers [ they're behind load-balancers, so just one "machine" name is fine ] included so I can dump youtube for just simple samples/demos that don't need to be massively public?

Not quite sure I understand what you mean Adrenalynn. Care to elaborate?

I own some video streaming servers in a couple Tier-1 datacenters. (Windows Media/Quicktime/Real as well as http streaming).

I think it'd be cool to put up clips I want to share here, but not youtube-for-the-world.

Can this new embedding feature be convinced to support my streaming servers? I can pm you the single domain name that load balances over all the streaming servers - just like youtube is a single domain name for many servers.

Yes, I believe I can set this up, but I think I have to create the php files in the backend to support the videos first. I'll have to do some investigating next week. In the meantime, could you PM me the domain name, links to some videos and any applicable code that you think I may need?

If it's going to require more than typing in a domain (some of those listed are windows media, so I thought it might not), in all seriousness - fogeddaboudit. It's not worth any time expenditure on your part!

I'd still love to check it out to see how hard it would be to do:) I love figuring things out like this. I'm not saying that I'll get it all setup, just that I'll definitely look at what sort of work is involved.

If you really want - I'll upload some robo-video in a few minutes.

godtube is as inappropriate for these forums as porntube IMO. Otherwise, I like the tool so far. It's pretty slick.

I tried the thing, and it does work, but requires Flash. I haven't been able to get Flash installed for Firefox under Linux yet.

I haven't been able to get Flash installed for Firefox under Linux yet.Man... that whole Linux thing is sounding like more and more of a pain in the a#@;)

Just givin ya crap Dale. My best friend is a Linux junkie too and I always tease him about it when he's havin a hard time trying to get something to run/work on it.

True, it does take more work to get everything setup and working, especially for multimedia, using Linux. It's very nice when everything is setup properly though.

Hey everyone! Great news!!! This plugin is now be working without having to add the media BBCode yourself:D

I just tested this with a YouTube video. All I did was paste the URL for the video, and the plugin automatically added the BBCode and embedded the YouTube video:D:D

If you run into any problems with any videos not automatically embedding, let me know or post your question here.

It's always been working for me with just a cut-and-paste. My video above was a cut-and-paste link, and it figured it out on its own...

Alex
05-05-2008, 02:43 PM
hmm.... that's really strange. Cut-and-paste URL's didn't work for me before. Oh well, it's working now for me:D

This is a test..

If you saw the video with sound, it worked.
