So my brother sent me an email today, with a link to this very cool I/O chip from Rabbit, the Rabbit RIO (http://www.rabbit.com/products/rio/).

It has an SPI interface, and:



8 independent functional channels with 4 ports each
Each functional channel can be configured as:

Bi-directional I/O
PWM or PPM outputs
TRIAC signal generators
Input capture (pulse length and frequency)
Counter (event or timers)
Quadrature decode peripheral



Basically, you configure it in software using configuration registers. 3.3 volt operation, 5 volt tolerant pins, 10mm x 10mm TQFP chip.

Looks pretty amazing to me...
