Hi to all in the community, and i must say i am very impressed with the calibre of robots being built all great work.this is my 8th robot build and was spurred on by Tyberious`s J5 project.i have always wanted to build a J5 and i think my next project will be an R2.
it was built using a lynxmotion Kit but with quite a few modifications done.the robot uses an onboard pc and my plan is to make it fully autonomous and interact with its surroundings.

a close up of his head.i used 10 rectangular blue HBLED`s for his "mouth" all glued together.his "eyelids" were a must and after loads of trial and error with micro servos i settled for the above,as i could not get them to move in all axis as on the real J5.

I also fitted RC shocks as in Tyberious J5 project,i used elongated mounts so the travel wasnt restricted and still holds the torso up when powered off.he can also lean forward and pick objects up and get himself back up.

not far from being complete now !

Via pico itx pc mounted with i/o and connected, running a very stripped down version of win xp

close up of wiring etc.

well now for the programming !.is a robot ever finished ?......i always seem to be adding bits and improving this and that.

a quick power on test below :-

Ha! Very nice man. He looks sort of perma-angry but I like it, adds to his personality. The eyelid thing is something I've dealt with quite a bit and likewise havent had much success (the scale is so small its incredibly difficult). That said- I think I'm pretty close to having a working solution.

Great work though, can't wait to see more. So far thats a Pico ITX J5 in England, US, and New Zealand!

Hi Andrew,

actually i have seen it done,i think theres a vid on you tube :-

YouTube - 1: J5 Eyelid test demo

a clever chap, where i went wrong is he mounted 2 servos on the "eye lids" them selves where as i did not.
but by no means are the eye lids finished on mine as still not happy

Oh I know it can be done.. the problem is scale. The above eyelids are as wide as the entire bot. It would be super easy on that large of scale, but with a bot that's head is only 2.5" wide its a lot harder to implement.

when i did mine,i didnt have the "drive" on an eye lid i did it with linkages and it looked messy.but when i saw his i thought "ahh" thats how to do it,simple really.now iv got some really tiny dc motors i can put to good use now :O)

Very nice looking Johnny! I love the head.
As far as the eye lids video, note the portable phone in the background thats smaller then one eye lid..

Also I hate when people talk and talk and talk on their videos. A 5 second video with a minute 25 of talk.

Concerning the eyelids, have you considered using a bowden-cable type of attachment, maybe in combination with some microservo's?
More along the lines of animatronics than robotics, but still..

The eyelid implementation is something I've been working on a solution for with mine for months. I think I have something dialed in finally though... if I only had some time to get it together.

Same here,in fact i worked on an eye solution before i built the robot.the scale is a lot smaller but it can be done.the idea i am working on now is using tiny pager motors.i will post a vid once iv fabricated it and its working properly.and not to make it look messy is an issue too, i just think having the eye movements will bring a whole new dimension to the j5 (ie expressions/moods etc).

thanks for the great comments btw.

i was also going to upgrade his arms but its cost a small fortune already and iv run out of money for now,but as you all probably know when is a project ever finished.so i will no doubt mod them at some point, programming will be the biggest task and its going to be a big learning curve for me....EEk!
