I would, but you don't wanna see it..
Seriously... as I noted somewhere around here before, I thrive in an absolute clutter and mess.
There's a system in it though, it's just that no-one can see the system but me.

That sir is exactly why my machines take so long to develop. I get to bring out my 'workshop' once in a while -when the wife isn't around- and it tends to sprawl across the living room in a way that reaps looks dripping with ire and incomprehension when she eventually discovers me puttering away my life at its heart.

My workshop(s) exist in boxes so a photo would be anticlimactic.

Jeebus, that makes most of the electronics/surplus shops I've frequented look like the innards of a Jawa sandcrawler...

Oh, and childish envy demands that I hate you. Just a little bit, but it's there.

Awesome layout btw Lynn, seems supercomfortable and handy to work in a place like that.

She's got swords...

Cool.

:)

Those are both signed by David Carradine, The Bride's sword, and Bill's sword.

My real hardware is upstairs in my mini-dojo/gym, which I don't seem to hit near often enough these days.

ScuD - I had to break my shop-shop down. The only thing left in my garage that's usable is the 48" break and the horizontal/vertical bandsaw... The rest of my house is messy, but I can't stand a mess in my lab. No where else does it bother me. A little mess is ok, but the tools and parts need to be exactly precisely where I expect them to be. Nothing as annoying as holding a screw-driver in one hand, hemostat in your mouth, and blindly reaching for the needle-nose to find them not where you expect.

LOVE spiders! You should avoid my home office upstairs. I've transplanted (and frequently hand-feed) three Black Widow Spiders (l. Hesperus), one behind each of my filing cabinets. They're great for keeping the other bugs down.

workshop space and test gear

http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/5661/pict0389editedvt2.jpg

Ok, to have fun in robotics you need a workspace that you can comfortably work in, here are a few shots of my workspace, Although it looks crowded everything has it's place and is easy to access.

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/1930/pict0391editedkz8.jpg

Most of my components are situated on the left in storage drawers like capacitors, resistors, transistors ect. LEDS and special ic's next to the PC screen on the right. and to the left in those two wooded box's are all my 74 and LM series Ic's.

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/1930/pict0391editedkz8.jpg

Here you can see the main work area where building and testing is carried out, The shelf above the storage box in those plastic box's house a selection of special LEGO Technics parts, But have over Ten Large plastic box's of Technics. To the right on the wall house components in plastic bags for ease of use in front of my work area.

http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/8825/pict0393editedeo9.jpg

This storage area contains all my Parallax components, Sensors, leads, encoders,Stamps, ect. All handy to my workbench.

This is a close up of my storage area for Capacitors, resistors and voltage regs.

http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/9319/pict0395editedzz1.jpg

This is my prototyping area where circuits are designed before the final stage of completion. Area above on shelf are micro switches, relays and all manor of robotic mechanical devices.

I have 16 drawers where larger components are stored.

Ok, you asked for it....

Totally the opposite of the fine shop setups others have posted... welcome to the messy room & garage of crabfu... Actually these days I do all of the work in the living room- while my wife watches tv, I tinker around and listen to the shows. Therefore I ended up with a lot of boxes, carrying stuff back and forth. You know those cat ladies who collect dozens and dozens of them? Well I think I have the same psychological disorder, but with gadgets and toys... I'm a horder for sure....

Just a couple Pics of the workshop and bench area.

Theres a pic of the CNC mill some manual mills and drill press. The green guy is a 20 ton press which I havnt used yet but want to make some biped brackets on. There is CNC wireforming machine as well which I have some ideas for in the future as well. A precision grinder and a lathe. The equipment is at the shop where I work at a tool and die company. There are several 4-slide machines as well as the cnc to make parts for the automotive industry.

Did you need a robot part? This is one wall with a few drawers opened. Yes. Those are piles and piles of motor controllers, sonar sensors, motor mounts, accelerometers, batteries...

How about a robot kit? Here's 1 corner of a storage room.

646

Maybe some RFID tags? This is 1 drawer.

649

How about some hubs? This is 1 drawer.

648

Did you say you needed FSRs? Here, I grabbed a handful of the .5 inch from FSR drawer? How many did you say? 400? No problem. That's a big robot you are building there!

Those are some great shops, some even seem to have cleaning-crews and assistants! Here goes mine. I have a shed that I conditioned as a shop to work on all heavy duty, dirty, noxious and noisy stuff and an inside-the-house to my wife chagrin, since that means she has less room for her crafts, although she is slowly encroaching on my space, it started 50-50 and now it is more like 25-75!:genmad:
But, hey, cannot complain (you know what happens if you do! LOL!)

God I wish I had a workshop like that. My workspace is split between my office/lab where the computers/electronics are, and my garage where I do fabrication and assembly. Somehow I always need to cross disciplines and do mechanical stuff in the lab and electronic stuff in the garage. Plus I need to have some tools duplicated otherwise I'm always trekking back and forth.

I won't post pictures because it's embarrassing.

I heard something really interesting on some NY public radio a few days ago. An interview with some guy that is trying to create some sort of Open Hardware sharing (OSH?

The idea is that if you are FABing something instead of buying tools and going homeless, you join a network of freaks like us and simply circulate your project among those that have the tools-skillset and then you do the same in kind for them. Not a really bad idea, specially since UPS and such exist in this country, and besides everyone here seems to belong to WHA. Any ideas???

There are services out there where you can take classes and use the big expensive tools too. I think I remember that Metaform belongs to one of them. The one Make touts, maybe?

TechShop: http://techshop.ws/

Bit expensive, but if you need a Bridgeport mill, an Epilog laser cutter, or just a place to do some welding it can be well worth it.

Whew. My memory doesn't completely fail me, at least. See! I *do* pay attention. :)

Well, that is actually what I do at the University (without studying or paying :veryhappy:) I just walk into the many shops and make friends with the shop caretaker or teacher, make some smalltalk or lisp  and end up doing whatever I need. But I was thinking more like a barter system where you actually trade functions like programming in exchange for building etc.
