I have a system that is currently using a stepper motor and I would like to try and replace it with a Dynamixel XM430-W350 actuator.
The control board sends step pulses and a direction signal to a stepper control board. I am wondering if there is anyway I can control a Dynamixel position and direction with a Step and Direction pulse signal?

Has anyone seen this before or think it would be possible? Thanks for your help.

My guess is no. That servo wants a 5v half duplex serial signal...

The servo itself cannot be controlled with that signal.

However, you can build a converter circuit using a microcontroller that uses a counter to count step/direction, and sends serial commands to the servo for where to go.

Note that this will not be an exact 1:1 timing correspondence, because the step/direction driver you're currently using probably has a lower latency than the serial bus and update rate of the XM430 would have. If that latency/discrepancy is alright, then this wouldn't be particularly hard to build. You could even do it with an Arduino.
