OK...In light of the downturned economy we will be having a new Junkbot Challenge.

1) Participants can spend no more than $100 on new parts. (document your spending Bonus points for spending the least.)
2) No more than 20 percent of the robot by weight can come from a kit.
3) The robot has to be eligible for at least one event at robogames 2009. Bonus for being able to enter it in more than one event.

Robots must be posted by midnight pacific time christmas eve.

Winner gets half of their robot up to $50 cash from me, and a drink at robogames 2009 (if they are 21 or older) if they actually win one of the events their junkbot is entered in...ok they don't have to win I'll probably get them a drink anyway.

So go be cheap!

void where prohibited.:p

Ooh Oh! Does Roybot count?

http://forums.trossenrobotics.com/gallery/files/1/4/9/2/megatronbomb.jpg

Built entirely out of stuff I had laying around! :D

Your free beer means nothing to me, I get a free beer pass at Robogames :p

darkback2
10-02-2008, 11:39 AM
I want a free beer pass...I'm not sure that your qualified...as in possibly disqualified...depends on if the stuff was laying around at work...or at home. Also...the judges will have to decide if SES counts as a kit.

Awww, we hardly have anything laying around!

Tyberious,

I don't want you to think you are inelligeble...just you have to play by the same rules as everyone else. Your closet is a bit more well stocked than the average bear's. That said, $100 is a huge limit. You can do a lot on ebay for $100...especially with your employee discount.:p

DB

Oh...and as a shout out too all of you Noobies, The last person who won this competition made a walker using plastic forks, and it was his first robot! Anyone can do this...just be creative!:)

DB

DresnerRobotics
10-02-2008, 03:29 PM
Okay, RoyBot technically cost me $6.96 in parts I didn't have laying around :D

(Don't mind me DB, I'm just being a PITA)

darkback2
10-02-2008, 03:48 PM
Don't worry...seeing that someone else posted to this thread is like getting a birthday present. I think next round as in January will be everyone against you...and the limit for us will be 1 million dollars and you have to build your robot blind folded with one hand behind your back. Oh...and I had to look up PITA on google.

Hey everyone...

The question has been asked, Which event in robogames does your robot have to be eligeble for...the answer is, any event. Anything from line following to fire fighting to the shooting gallary. My whole point in doing the junk bot contests is to get the creative juices flowing. With cost being a major factor I find myself making design choices that I would not otherwise make.

So go to the robogames site, check out the events, and think of a way to get there for under $100. This is honor system based by the way. Try to talk about the deals you got in your writeup. That will help a lot.

Have Fun!

"Best of Show" counts for any and everything though ;)

So does this mean I'm not disqualified?

4mem8
10-03-2008, 02:16 PM
DB, thanks for the info, BTW can I be exempt from the cost to get my bot to you??$100 + freight. Ha ha. Now the pressure is on to build something.

darkback2
10-03-2008, 02:50 PM
Ok...a couple of things we don't exactly count in the cost of building.

Shipping Shipping is the same as driving to the store. It doesn't count.

Glue/epoxy/reson basically things that you don't use all of, or use over time with a large number of robots. (so long as these are not used a structural elements of the robot...you can also prorate the use of these things. So if you make robot panels entirely out of epoxy and you used half of an $8 jar then you could list it as $4...though I seriously doubt anyone here is going to do that.) That said I am using aluminum for mine. I have purchased 4 dollars worth of aluminum sheeting. I am not going to take all of the scraps back to the recycling center and try to say that I only used $3 worth...unless I can get the other dollar back.

Nuts and Bolts I included these in the cost of my last junkbot but its up to you.

Velcro/zipties Any roboticist that doens't have these things needs to get them anyway.

Tools Unless they are encorporated in your robot. You can't buy a $2000 milling machine, and 6 dollars in stepper motors and say you made a CNC milling machine for $6...that said if you find/steal a milling machine and add $6 in parts to convert it into a CNC then thats OK.

Hope this helps.

DB

Well, That sorted that question out DB,Thanks, but the pressure is still on.

10-03-2008, 06:15 PM
Hum, I should try ou this competition. Christmas is far, so I will (hopefully) have some time to build something over time. I have a lot of projectSS that I am juggling at the same time.

Adrenalynn

What about Bail? Does that count in the cost?

darkback2
10-04-2008, 01:53 AM
What about Bail? Does that count in the cost?

Of course not...besides in jail they teach you how to make a shiv and bong out of anything. I figure if you end up in the slammer you will probably be at an advantage for this one. You will have greater incentive to build a digging robot to get you out. :p

DB

PS...I'm not bailing anyone out of jail. If you end up in jail your on your own. bonus for anyone who uses parts off of a police car though.

If I can find anything else to enter I will. I was thinking fire fighting...hmmm

Ok...I'm bumping this thread...shamelessly. There have to be more than just two people other than myself that are interested in this contest. I know one person who is interested in making a software bot. How could that cost more than $100? Ok people lets see who else can step up to the challenge.

I'd enter my latest project, the KidBot 4200, as I only spent ~$30 on actual parts, the rest were already lying around. Only problem is I way overspent on adding the autonomy and self-recharging features. I don't even wanna consider the tens (possibly hundreds) of thousands spent on that part over the last ~7 years...

Hehe. I didn't realize you'd actually added KidBot to the entries list. Guess I should provide a few more details then.

In the chest area is; an Arduino to run it all, an LCD display which rotates through a few halloween-ey phrases (BOO!, Trick Or Treat, etc...), the Treat Receptacle Hatch, and an old multimeter to provide battery status.

In the left wrist is a pair of buttons, one triggers the battery meter, the other opens the Hatch (via servo). When the hatch opens the light in the hatch goes on and the LCD says "Trick or Treat". When it closes the display says "Thank You" and the light goes off (ooooh).

There's a small image gallery over here (http://www.robocommunity.com/gallery/14375/Gallery-Arduino-Halloween-Costume/), and a quickie video of the hatch doing its thing on youtube.

Halloween night while critter was trick-or-treat-ing nobody seemed to notice the electronics at first. He'd walk up and say his thing then punch the button to open the hatch. When they'd give him some candy he'd toss it into the hatch, then poke the button and close the door, and _that_ is when they'd notice it was motorized. Then they'd "ooh" and "ah" and such, and want to know where we bought it...

Does it have to be the whole 'bot, or can it be just the control mechanism?

I'm wanting to enter the ultimate-trickest-coolest-ever biomechanical controller. Wireless, completely body-worn. This one is 3DOF but it could be at least 8DOF with a little expansion... Arduino/XBee-based/scrap aluminum/Dollar-Store/Radioshack-run based... :)

Oh yeah, I'm going to pin this thread and unpin the other one...

Charlie...

I harvested a lot from previous robots.

The SSC-32 came from Lexi my hexipod.
The servos are MG 995s. I got them for $5 a piece
The battery also came from Lexi.
The aluminum came from the scrap yard.
The gun came from walmart
I got the Phidget 8/8/8 from the trossen booth (Maybe it was a gift.)
The Gripper came from Vivian

The PC I've had for a really long time
the Krittercam came from an ER-1

How I saved money

I made all of the brackets from scratch, and am using cheap servos. I keep reusing some of the same parts for other robots, and...did I mention I made all the brackets from scratch?

OK...enough.

I was a bit late and it's not really finished yet, but the pricing is locked-in.

Aluminum: 2in x 1/8in x about 8". I had it on-hand, but it would have been $4.00
Aluminum: 1in x 1/8in x about 8" angle channel - On-hand, but it would have been $6.00
Glove : $1.07 at the Dollar Store
Hardware: ~$3.00 (on-hand)
Velcro straps (gifted, thanks Ooops!)
Setscrew Hubs (x2): $6.00ea = $12.00 (on-hand from last-year's robot)

Flex Resistor (not pictured): $12.00 (On-hand)
10k Potentiometers (x2): 0.45ea = ~$1.00

XBee 2.5 x 2 (on-hand): $19 x 2 = $38
Arduino = $35
Two custom boards = $19 [may or may not swap out the ones below with mine, but it will be a swap, so -$19]
Two not-so-custom boards [XBee Shield 2.0 and proto-board] - ($13+$9)
Hand-made XBee board on receiver side: $3.00 in Radio Shack parts (on-hand)
6v power supply (custom) $6 (on-hand parts)
3.14v power supply (custom) $7 (on-hand parts)

I think that's it...

Cost to build if you owned nothing: $150.07 [+Servo Controller of your choice]
Cost to me with parts-on-hand: $24.07 [My receipts total $22.91, so I did accurately over-estimate]

Rudolph
12-26-2008, 03:31 PM
Kidbot new parts;
- 6 yards shiny fabric, thread to match, new needles -- $20, reject, er, clearance sale @Jo-Ann Fabrics
- Metal dryer hose (arms and legs) -- $10 @Lowes

Kidbot on-hand parts;
- Arduino Diecimila -- would be $35 new
- little breadboard -- on hand, $5 new
- 7.2v 1300mAh battery -- borrowed from R/C car, $15 new
- 20x4 LCD -- leftover from PC case modding days, probably about $15 new
- Servo -- pirated from 15 year old R/C car, $10 new
- Linkages and carbon fiber "rounding" strips -- pirated from leftovers of R/C plane kit, maybe ~$10 new
- Analog multimeter -- found on road years ago, no idea on new cost (might be hard to find a mini analog meter nowadays?)
- 1/4" foam core board -- found in storage closet, maybe $3-5 @Staples
- roll of aluminum foil -- $1 at Dollar Tree
- various wire -- from the collection, ~$5 new
- various buttons, resistors, LEDs -- pirated from old VCRs and such
- Autonomy and self-charge wetware -- Priceless

Total to build from nothing; $130+
Total spent by me; $30

:) That's the + in $130+. Though, technically, building the kid was free. It's just the maintenance and upkeep that's a killer...

I guess some folk might have to buy a few rounds first in order to "build" their custom wetware.
