I was at the store the other day, and i came across this Disney Wall-E toy.. It doesn't move, but it's arms and head were animated by a single motor through a gear set. The thing did speak random gibberish.. End result was an annoying plastic toy.... A disgrace to Wall-E ;)

So i took it apart last night and had a look at it... Planned where i could fit some servo's, Sharp IR sensor and my custom pic board.

Today I ran down to HVWTech (i'm fortenate enough to live in the same city as their head office ;) ) and i purchased the items Wall-E needed to LIVE!

I also modified the circuit that the toy came with. So i can trigger the sounds from my pic. I even cut the board in half to remove useless circuits lol ..

Here are the parts i used..
- 2 GWS Nano servos
- 2 modified parallex servos
- 1 GWS regular servo
- 18F4685 microcontroller @ 20 mhz
- 1 Sharp IR Distance sensor
- My custom 40 pin PIC board
- Code written in C
- Lots of melting plastic
- Took 7 Hours to build and program

I don't know how to post a youtube video directly in here with ubb... So here is a link to the full set of pics and video: http://atomic.speculation.org/Graphics/2008-10-07%20Calgary%20Wall-E%20Robot%20Part%202/ (http://atomic.speculation.org/Graphics/2008-10-07%20Calgary%20Wall-E%20Robot%20Part%202/)

Additionally, here is a link directly to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDodQwu1slM

Here is the second video that shows a lot more of his personality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGo3iVMx6GE

Commented and Rated over on YouTube. NICE hack! That's what Disney's toy should have been!

+Rep for the combination of K9 and Wall-E.

That is the Wall-E Interactive, I am waiting for the Wall-e Ultimate, It stands 16" tall and does just about everything. GWJax sent me this link today from ToysRus, http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2882455

Nice hack by the way.

yah i totally did . it's great. It was the inspiration for mine. See i bought the toy for my collection, it dissapointed me. So i started wondering if there as a better one for sale. Saw yours and was impressed. Then i thought about making a shell (like i did with my k-9 and a few others). And decided since i already had a shell, see if i could hack that.

I like that yours is so much bigger . leaves a lot of room for more servos.

If you want yours to speak like wall-e, you can either do what i did and hack an existing eeprom. Or rather then fudging the emic, purchase this: http://www.hvwtech.com/products_view.asp?ProductID=598

it's cheaper and the circuit board removed from the unit is quite small. Throw in an SD card full of wall-e samples, and your rock'n

you can make your own wall-e sounds using an audio editor tool that has "effects". The effect you are looking for is "sample stretching". I use it often in audio production.

thumbs up again for ur project :)

Okay i made a final video today becuase i beleive i got all the personality complete. He's pretty robust. And has been cruising around quite a bit.

I threw a collection of videos of him cruising around in an isolated area. Just to give you an idea of what he's like. His battery lasts quite a long time. And the whole time while i'm watching a movie, or working.. He's hilarious to have cruising around the living room .

Sadly, lighting in the living room sucks. So i did the video in the workshop in the basement. Hope you enjoy the vid!!

I heard of hacking before, but this is just beyond amazing work djsures, congrats!

I got you entered in the TRC Project Contest;) BTW, I had to rename your thread to DIY Hacked WALL-E Toy to distinguish the diff between this entry and 4mem8's entry. Let me know if you want me to change the title to something else.
