Getting started with IR

All the wireless communication I have done to date has been RF. I am looking to get started with IR. A simple send/receive application would be great to get started with. Then moving into detection, etc.

Can anyone give me a a few pointers on getting started? What hardware do I need, etc.?

I did a project a while ago that used a remote control (standard tv remote) to control moving around

motor driver of choice
