Lieutenant Dan is my entry for the Junkbot 3 contest. darkback2 wanted animated humanoids, so I figured I'd build one that "ain't got no legs". Hope it still qualifies.

Lt. Dan is mostly made of my 25+ year old Erector set and all of my servos (I had to pirate from both my R/C trucks to get all seven). I bent the brackets out of Erector girders, and super glued a nut on the back of two servos as a pivot. The brain is an ATMega168 programmed with Arduino (because I'm still not very good at programming C for microcontrollers).

Here is right after his first test. The fridge "scared" him, but instead of backing up he tipped over forwards and broke his neck.

A bench photo. This is where I realized just how creepy the styrofoam head made it look.

So I sharpied a smile on and stuck a little Darth Vader helmet on top.

Lt. Dan's brain.

Finally (for now anyway) a couple videos of his second excursion (I failed to record the neck-breaking first one).

Looks like I need to work on the arm position code a bit... And attach the wheels better. I'll post follow ups when that's been done.

Total cost for this was $0 as I had all of this lying about. As I said, I had to steal a few servos from other toys too. I've been carting the Erector set around since I was five. Some of the brain was acquired as christmas gifts. The Vader helmet is part of a Mr Potato Head I got for my 31st birthday ;)

Update March 24, 2009: More photos, including closer-ups of the servo "brackets" are available here (http://picasaweb.google.com/rudforce/LieutenantDan).

I'm glad you added the smile and the Vader hat otherwise that thing would be just plain creepy! I really dig it man!

One more video with the newer arm code.

Apologies for the poor lighting, the CFLs don't do much for recording video, and the turtles have hijacked all the clamp lamps...
