You're going to need to know the closely approximate weight of the intended completed bot including batteries, the size of the wheels, the number of wheels you'll be powering, the speed you want it to go, how much acceleration you want, and the maximum slope before one can do more than randomly stab at motors.

Without motors, you don't know what you need for ESC. Without that, you don't know what you need for control interface. Beyond that, you need to figure out the sensor packages you want to use before you pick a microcontroller to read 'em.

That basically just leaves us with a pico or mini-ITX, or a netbook. You didn't specify. :)

Three inch wheels will generally get stuck on most carpet. Toss in a little dog-hair and you're dead for sure. 10" wheels? 13" wheels? Garden carts will tend toward 10-13" wheels.

A 12Ah gel cell will weigh in around 8.5-10lbs all by itself. Figure given a couple small motors that might drive them for 15-20mins. Moderate size motors much less. What's your battery budget, how much elevation change do you have, and how much area are you trying to cover?
