I'm currently working on a small robot project for which the main focus is my putting together a control system using only analog signals. The mechanical performance is not very important, and, as a college student, I'm tight on money. I'm looking for suggestions on a good way to get my hands on some motors with integral gear boxes. I need three identical motors, although a fourth would be nice as backup. I have thought about scavenging these motors from toys or something, but in many cases I wouldn't actually know what was inside until I opened it up. Any suggestions?

For reference, this robot is probably going to be between 6 inches and one foot long.

More important than size: how heavy will the bot be?

Solarbotics makes $6 gear motors that are quite good for small, light bots: http://www.trossenrobotics.com/store/p/4917-GM8-Gear-Motor-143-1-Inline-Offset-3-6V.aspx (The solarbotics site also has some other speed configurations I believe).

It should be very light. I'm considering wood as a construction material

Getting motors from old products like cordless drills, CD players or old VCRs would be a good choice for free ones. Getting a matched set of three might be a little harder though.

Small geared motors can sometimes be hard to find at reasonable prices, but perhaps modifying a servo would get the job done for you. Just open it up and connect the power directly to the motor inside. You can find very cheap ones if you know where (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.20084) to (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.31962) look (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.20087).

Why a servo with less torque and less speed than the gear motors, which don't have to subsequently be modified, that Fergs was talking about? I'm not sure $1 warrants using the wrong tool for the job and hours of modification...
