It's sad that range sensors are pretty dumb right now - they give you the same resolution independently of depth.
You get too dense points in close up areas and not dense enough points in far away areas.
Even very expensive LIDARs are the same way.

What about making a smart range sensor?
It would analyze readings of the first scan and then adjust resolution on the second scan over the same area. This way you get improved data for, say SLAM.

I was thinking of trying to do this with Ferg's PML.
What do you guys think?
