Setup your computer to accept software from ROS.org.

Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid)

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://packages.ros.org/ros/ubuntu lucid main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ros-latest.list'

Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick)

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://packages.ros.org/ros/ubuntu maverick main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ros-latest.list'

Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty)

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://packages.ros.org/ros/ubuntu natty main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ros-latest.list

You open a terminal window, and type in the command that corresponds to your system (be it 10.04, 10.10 or 11.04)

Hi John,

A very nice set of ROS video tutorials for beginners was just announced on the ros-users mailing list. I thought they might interest you. You can read the announcement and find the link to the tutorials here:

Oops--I didn't realize that Fergs was pointing to a video on the same website! Even so, you may find some of the other tutorials helpful as well--looks like a nice list.
