View Full Version : Phidgets and Windows Vista

Hello all.
I just ordered my first Phidget. The one with the 64 LED's. On my laptop I'm running the pre release version of Vista. The library files will not install. I was wondering if there is a way to manually install the files. Maybe install them on a non Vista machine and then copy them to the Vista.

In the near future I'm planning on a new laptop. If Phidgets won't work with Vista then I may opt for a non Vista OS until it is able to work with Vista.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Do you have the .NET 2.0 framework installed? I'm not sure if it comes pre-installed in Vista...

Yes I do. I'm using Visual Basic Express 2005 as the IDE. I've got all of the Express languages installed. VB just happen to be the one that I am most comfortable with using.

VB Express is a nice language to get started with Phidgets.

It looks like you can run Phidgets on Vista, but there are some security issues going on. I went to the Phidget forums and Patrick is working on this issue to fully correct it, but in the meantime you will have to do some extra work. Here is what he had to say:

"This has to do with some security issues with how the installer works - I'm not exactly sure yet what those issues are, but there is a work-a-round. You need to create a .bat file that runs the installer and then run that batch file as administrator. For example, I created install.bat on my desktop, put the command "msiexec /i "c:\Users\patrick\Desktop\Phidget21.msi" into it, and then right click and chose 'Run as Administrator'. This will allow the installer to do what it wants to and succeed. See: http://blogs.conchango.com/pauloreichert/archive/2006/11/21/Windows-Installer-MSI-packages-error-code-2869-on-Windows-Vista.aspx (http://blogs.conchango.com/pauloreichert/archive/2006/11/21/Windows-Installer-MSI-packages-error-code-2869-on-Windows-Vista.aspx)"

Hope all that made sense:)

What sort of project are you working on?

Thanks for the reply. I've also been checking on the Phidgets fourms and saw that. I tried but had the same problem with the second error, can't remember the exact number right now though.

Hey Danjo,

Phidgets is going to be working on the problem as soon as they get a Vista box to duplicate the error. When there is an update, it should be posted in the following thread:

Sorry I couldn't help you out more, but it's out of our hands. Keep us posted with your progress:)

I think I got my problem solved. Use on the sugestions here and on www.phidgets.com (http://www.phidgets.com) and by turning off the UAC in Vista.
UAC = User Acess Control

Not shure exactly what fixed it but it now works.
