Post qualifying videos for the 2017 Robogames Mech Warfare Event here.

Videos should be 5 minutes long and demonstrate you can hit targets and have mobility for the entirety. They can be video'd in whatever space you have available... kitchen floor, garage, outdoors, etc...

The FPV sound of '99 is awesome! The walking distorts enough to be a nice "crunch" for footsteps. and the firing is a authentic-sounding beep-SMACK!

I love these videos! And I have 13 months to get one ready myself! I have two questions:

1) Has anyone implemented non-linear aiming? Such that the servo response is small with small joystick deflection, and larger with large deflections? In the videos I see folks struggling to make small movements. This is the kind of thing that's very easy to implement in software

2) Has anyone considered gyro-stabilized turrets? I would think I would be almost unbeatable if I could move and fire at the same time, and a stabilized gun should make this pretty easy.

Just thinking aloud!

The main problem is that the servos have limited resolution. 1024 steps over 300 degrees means about 0.3 degrees per step. Add backlash and the inherent flex in thin (lightweight) construction, and it's harder than it seems! (The MX series gets you 4096 steps over 360 degrees, so slightly better.)

I've seen some people try to use lever or pushrod based designs (the new Numa in the other thread seems like one?) but don't know how well that works. With the right design, it should give you better precision; don't know what it does for backlash and flex.

Josh Pieper did this last fall. Walking while shooting. There's still jerking when moving, as far as I can tell, and there was some other hardware issue that prevented him from doing really well IIRC. You may be able to find the thread if you look for the Phoenix robo meetup.

For gyro stabilization, the servos are too slow to do a good job, so you need to go with drone flyer FPV style gimbals. These use brushless DC motors with direct drive, and glue the sensor onto the actual gimball. There's a question of payload capacity, because the lighter-weight gimbals are for cameras in the 100 gram weight class, and gun + camera + ammo weighs more than that. (The tube-based ammo feeders may help here.)
There's also the problem that a gimbal can't stabilize very well when there is lateral (translation) motion which there is a fair bit of when walking.
It's still a great idea, and I have some designs myself to that effect, but the main problem is always time or cost -- for students, cost; for employed engineers, time :-)

Our turret worked great, we had some problems with the USB on our processor board cutting out. With our wifi and video over USB, when it cut out, it was end of match. That said, overall it worked well enough to place third.

I only have half a dozen BBs for use in Onyx tomorrow ... (once I've re-done the laser that un-focused itself.)
So, I'll be taking grateful advantage of the extended qualification video time period!

I promise I didn't cheat when the 'bot is outside the picture! (In fact, I was sitting in the kitchen, not able to see except through the camera at all.)

Yes it's a double eagle AEG, I'm not sure why it sounds different. There are different ones floating around the club purchased at different times.

Umm thanks for the complement on the garage floor, I cleaned it before I shot the video.

And yes - I did lose to them. Don't know why I didn't think of just knocking them over. Seriously though, they improved greatly throughout the event and the mech you see here wasn't the same as the Mech that fought the bronze medal match.
