The R-team folks are taking more comprehensive video/pictures, but for those not at the event, here's what the arena looks like:

A lot bigger than previously! You can get lost in that maze when peeping through the video hole.

Frickin' awesome if you ask me!

The arena was bigger and the building layout was more interesting with many different shot angles and battle possibilities. With the 15 point limit on each plate I had to move around to get side shots. I found I became much more immersed than any other time in the past. It was very addicting. My fight with Apophis on Saturday was the most epic fight I have ever been in. I didn't know he had gone thru the narrow alley and gotten behind me. I started getting rear hits and saw glowing tracer bbs pass by my front. The adrenaline kicked in and a bolted out of there and around the corner. I remember every move we both made and along with the feelings and thoughts. Anyone of you guys that are thinking about building a mech robot for 2018 should start now. Sign up next year to fight. You will be so glad you did.

I have some concerns about "going through the narrow alley." I tried that, didn't fit :-)
I can probably design a custom gait for just this purpose though, hoping we keep the arena design.

Ya... we originally thought it would be a good passage way for the light mechs but found out our bigger mechs could fit through with a little maneuvering. We kinda liked it so kept it...

It will give you something to work on for next year.

We've also discussed having blown out walls of some of the buildings so smaller mechs could sneak through the buildings or mechs could shoot through the buildings at certain angles.

Also discussed having some method for mech to get on top of buildings.. either a walkway or elevator.

Electric Ducted Fan units.

Two of the 5 inch 20 pound thrust units should work fine as jump jets ;-)

(I ran the weight/thrust calculation a while back, and you'd get something like a minute of thrust out of batteries you could actually put on a bot and lift with, but it should theoretically work!)

Looking good! Any videos from the battles?

Looking good! Any videos from the battles?

This year we decided to keep everyone outside of the arena and just let the Mechs battle. While it was good for the Mechs, it was not so good for video.

My wife tried to take video from outside of the arena, but the arena mesh really messed with the camera. I have some really poor quality video that I can see if any of its usable and post that.

Don't know if anyone had any more success with video?..

Should be able to pause this video frame by frame and then move around to get the 360 view.

Oh, that is neat! What sensor/camera is that?

I used a Gear 360 (Samsung). Records VR. I finally figured out the codex to get it to work on YouTube :) The Ricoh ‑ Theta SC 360 is also a good camera. I went with Samsung b/c it can interface with my phone.

I think it'd be awesome to have something like that on top of one of the buildings in the arena for recording matches next year!
