1) Is there a way to hide a thread I'm not interested in completely? I go to "New Posts" but then the only way to get rid of threads that I don't care about is to click into it and then back out. The "Thread Tools" popup doesn't seem to have anything for that.

Instead of clicking on "New Posts", try clicking on the "Quick Links" dropdown (next to search) and selecting "Subscribed Threads". This will bring up a list of only the threads that you participated in. If you reply to a thread, the system will automatically subscribe you to that thread. Also, if you wanted to subscribe to a thread without replying to it, you can always do that too. To do that, just go to a thread, and on the very first page at the top bar just below the page number, you'll see a dropdown "Thread Tools". Click on this and you'll see the option to "Subscribe to this Thread". You can do the same with any forum as well, to get notified of everything in that forum

Just look at the "Forum Tools" dropdown on the first page of a forum

2) I think it should be impossible to send a private message to yourself. I and at least one other person have been caught by sending a private message to ourselves rather than responding to the actual message. You get a message and there's this text box above -- it's a trap.

I'm not sure I 100% understand what is happening here here... Are you not clicking the "Reply" button underneath the PM when you read it? I'm not sure how you are sending a message to yourself without typing you're name in the recepient box?
In regards to it being setup so that it is impossible to send a PM to yourself: Private messaging is setup the same way as your email system is. If a member wants to "CC" themselves, they are free to do so. If they do not want to, then they simply look in the receipient box to ensure they're username is not in there.
I hope that helps! If you have more questions, don't hesitate
