Jon Hylands made something like this years ago called the Bioloid I/O Board. I own one, but I don't have any immediate plans for it.

That's a pretty cool device. Being able to set the motor control PWM values in a Dynamixel control table address is convenient.

You can't use the electric motor to brake? Or would that not work? My son's Dune Racer stops pretty fast, but he only weighs 42 pounds.
  5. Re: Arbotix-M with 6 AX-12A and a gyroscope + PC interface - Feasible?

You don't necessarily need an Arbotix M with this setup. The PC could do everything.

Question(s) Re: MX/AX servo arm - trouble connecting via ArbotiX

FWIW, the MX-64 in the shoulder can handle lifting that arm without the gearing. Unnecessary mechanical complexity creates additional points of failure.

You have probably seen this, but check out...

Unfortunately I know nothing of this "Arbotix GUI" you mention, but like Kurt said, you need to look at the manual.

You might also want to take a look at the HerkuleX DRS-0602, which has a higher resolution than the MX-64T (12960 vs 4096). But the MX-64T may be good enough.

    Re: Are dynamixel servos brushless

The Dynamixels seem to work well enough and last a long time. They use really high end motors. Of course this assume you are using them within spec (~1/5 stall torque continuous).

    Re: Are dynamixel servos brushless

HerkuleX is the closest competitor in the smart actuator space, and they use coreless motors, not brushless.

Of course brushless hobby servos have been around for a long time now.
