Thread: Need recommendation for USB or PCMCIA to RS232 (For AVR or PIC use)

  1. Need recommendation for USB or PCMCIA to RS232 (For AVR or PIC use)

Friend wanted to give me AVR programmer board for me to try to learn but it use serial RS232 connector, but i don't have it on my labtop.
I was told centain USB to serial converter don't work.

Can anyone recommend me (try & true if possible) ready made USB to RS232 or even PCMCIA to RS232, that support AVR or PIC development/programmer board,.... eeerrr....cheap?

That way, i can get started learning the AVR immediately.
Will this USB to RS232 works?

    USB base on FTDI chipset.

    Any help would be appreciated.

PS : I saw eBay sell a lot of those USB/PCMCIA to serial RS232 adapter really cheap. Which one will work best?

You can't use USB to Serial for any of the AVR programmers that I use/am familiar with.

    The PCMCIA adapter MUST have a 16**50 UART, like a 16550, 16C550, 16950, 16C950, etc.

*none* of the USB to '232 will work, including the one you linked to. It's just one of the hardware limitations of USB->RS232

By specification only (ie. I haven't used that particular device), the first linked item should work fine.

I've used the one in the second link with an AVR STK500 programmer and can confirm that it works well.

Good and comfortable to know that you have tried the one on the second link and it works.

Did you try the single RS232 port or the dual? Wonder if the dual RS232 works the same for $10 more.

I have a dual and a quad from the same manufacturer. I work on network equipment frequently and a good serial port or four or sixteen is a requirement.

    Thanks again Adrenalynn.
I'm about to pull a trigger to go ahead to buy one already.
I saw one of the website selling at good price for the 2 ports serial, but the speed is at 921,600 bps. I'm not sure if it's a problem with those AVR or PIC board. This card is base on OXFORD OX16CF950B chipset.

    Here the website: -
