Thread: Should we move Mech Warfare discussions to some other forum?

  1. Re: Should we move Mech Warfare discussions to some other forum?

While I certainly applaud the initiative, I'm not sure that something hosted solely by Jon is necessarily better than staying here at Trossen? Ideally we wouldn't have to host anything. Barring that, it would at least need to be a group of people not all from the same team who were dedicated to keeping it a group by adding more as necessary over time.

Also, if we do decide to move, it is worth trying to at least archive / copy the old threads for the day when vbulletin dies for good.

Anyone from R-Team want to weigh in with thoughts?

Yeah, I'm looking at various options for archiving vbulletin!

I'm happy to share admin duties -- in the first batch, I invited R-team as moderator, but anyone could really step up.

Currently, I'm carrying the $12/month hosting cost of server+domain. I'm happy to do that for approximately ever, but I'm also happy to share or set up a small foundation or whatever.

Specifically, having a forum with history plus ability to keep uploads, doesn't come for free, anywhere.
There's a "hosted Discourse" option, which is $100/month.
Slack removes discussions after a while, unless you pay $5/participant.
hackaday.io discussion threads seem ... poor.
Facebook pages are just one stream of consciousness.
    Yahoo groups are dead.
Google groups are a single stream, and doesn't do pictures particularly well.
Anything is better than nothing, but I think a Discourse that multiple people can contribute to is the best option.

I made a discord which is free. Will allow for more real time chat, like the good old days when we had a IRC server. Also a good place for people to ask questions.

The site being unreachable the other day makes this seem slightly more relevant.

There's some discussion going on here: https://forum.mechwarfare.org/
So far, it hasn't fallen off the internet :-)
