Thread: How to test Dynamixels upon arrival

  1. How to test Dynamixels upon arrival

Hi, when receiving expensive Dynamixels, what should one check to make sure that they arrived without any issue? Is updating the firmware the first thing to do?

I sometimes just run one of my own test sketches, that does something like: scan at the default baud rate to find any servo. It should find it probably as ID #1.

I then have my test program, maybe do set the ID, set my desired baud rate, and depending on servos set the respond time... Then try a couple of moves to make sure that it works that way...

Other times I use the Robotis sketches to do the same or their PC program.

Again nothing special. So far I have only had one DOA servo sort of (I think it worked for a couple of tests and then died...
    MX12W...

Is it recommended to always update the firmware upon receiving the dynamixels?

I did not always do it... Only if there looks like they have new features or important bug fixes. But with some of their newer servos I tended to update them when I could.

But sometimes I go by the: If it ain't broke don't fix it...

If it is MX and you want to use Protocol 2.0 you might have to update it. Plus Protocol 2.0 is miles better than 1.0. It's fantastic so many new features.
