Thread: Connect servo dynamicel XL-320 to wizard 2.0 without U2D2

  1. Question Connect servo dynamicel XL-320 to wizard 2.0 without U2D2

    Hello all,

    I would like to control my XL-320 (https://emanual.robotis.com/docs/en/dxl/x/xl320/) with the Wizard 2.0 (https://emanual.robotis.com/docs/en/.../#introduction) without U2D2 nor USB2Dynamixel.

Has anyone ever done this ?

I tried with an SN74LS241N chip and failed.

What is the actual challenge here? You can't just use a 74241, you need a USB UART adapter, which shows up as a COM port in Windows. Then you point the Robotis software at that COM port. Then you need that UART to know whether it's sending or receiving bytes -- a typical FTDI or CPI2101 serial port adapter won't do this, so you'll likely want to use an Arduino Leonardo or PJRC Teensy microcontroller, so you can set the "transmit direction" appropriately based on whether there's data to put on the wire, or you've sent the final stop bit.
