Help! PhantomX with PS2 Controller

I am trying to use a lynxmotion ps2 controller with the Arbotix-m Hexapod. I have been able to get a connection but the data ia not being recieved. I am using the ps2 test code. The one thing I notice is that the PS2 is used with the botboarduino which has a built in pull-up resistor for the DAT pin. Can I shimmy a 1K resistor in with the PS2? I would have to splice the 5v wire? Since Trossen no longer has the controller, I need to find a good wireless way to control the bot. Any help would be appreciated.

I have thought of using an XBee with the GoBLE app that is similar to a arbotix commander/ps2.

I just finished putting together the Mark III Hexapod and got it working and writing C code for it. This is the next thing I sorely want to do - a PS2 (or above) controller, so I'm also searching. I'll keep an eye on this and if I find anything I'll post it.
