Thread: flamethrowers

  1. flamethrowers

    From rules:

    • Flamethrowers are allowed, though highly ineffective due to the way that scoring is handled. Consider these weapons mostly for show. Contact an official prior to even considering a flamethrower.
    • Basic melee weapons are allowed. Powered and/or rotary melee weapons are not allowed.

It seems like not allowing powered or rotary melee weapons and allowing flamethrowers...well doesn't seem to jive.. Even if the flamethrowers are for show, who is going to want several thousands of dollars worth of mech being torched by an accident.

I think the solution is to have no heat weapons of any type, though of course, watching thousands of dollars worth of mechs melt away might have some entertainment value.

The flame throwers that *I've* seen in these events are just crowd pleasers. They'd have trouble lighting a cigarette.

But, hey, it's pretty easy. Can't handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen. ie. You don't have to participate in the "hard-core class"

As Adrenalynn said, they're intended for show. I doubt anything powerful enough to fry a bot would be allowed by Robogames anyway. And again- Hardcore class only. Even then, I'm not going to force anybody to participate in a match if they don't want to.

Right. But another solution would be to allow all rotary/powered/mellee/wide variety of weapons. I mean the level of "heat" has its limits as described by the current rules which limits a wide variety of weapons in the heavy class. I'm not saying there should be a limit just that I didn't understand the current limits.

Either way, little flame throwers are cool I suppose.

Think about the physics behind what would happen if a biped wielded a spinning weapon, and hit another biped. This isn't battlebots.

I just want to make it very clear to everyone that I have talked about "[unlimited RC combat-- not limited to but also including spinning weapons that challenge the laws of physics and the (laws of hobby level robotic balance), flamethrowers that indeed throw flames and are not just for show-- perhaps even modified lasers that require observers to sport interesting goggles that do not match anything that they have on at all-- a crime in California)]"; however, I am absolutely against forced flamethrower competitions. I was in one years ago (a long story) and though I won, I still have nightmares. (I'm also against forced tele-operated hobby level mech combat and kitten juggling...and some other stuff, too...i.e mimes-- does anyone like mimes?)

Last I checked, nobody was forcing anyone to partake in this event... other than Tybs forcing me to build a mech, but thats a different story...

He's trying to force me too, Fergs. He even gave me BAGS of spare parts, the bastridge. Like I flippin' have time for another darned robot.
