    Robot Task Planning Approaches?

    Hello,

I am at the point in my robotics project where I need to introduce some higher level task planning. For example, I want to be able to say, "Please bring me the red ball" and I'll be able to decompose this goal request into a series of subtasks such as "locate ball", "approach ball", "pick up ball", etc. I've been reading a number of academic papers on the subject such as:

    http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc...=10.1.1.41.544

which describes an earlier Task Description Language from the late 1990s. Does anyone have any experience actually coding this kind of thing? Or perhaps you have used an existing framework? I can probably program a fairly simple version of TDL on my own, but I don't want to reinvent the wheel if it has already been done to death. My code right now is in C# but I am thinking of eventually migrating to the Willow Garage ROS and porting my stuff to Python or C++.

    Thanks!
    patrick

At http://planning.cs.uiuc.edu/ you can find a downloadable version of a relatively recent and comprehensive book on planning algorithms.

If you´re going for ROS (which certainly seems to be a good idea) this is probably worth looking at: http://www.willowgarage.com/pages/software/trex

A good resource for you from the game industry might be aigamedev.com .

Thanks for the link. That also looks very interesting. Coincidentally, I had already been reading up on Hierarchical Task Networks.
