    SMPS2Dynamixel and Kinect?

    Hello Power Experts,

I am planning on powering a Kinect using the 12V battery on the iRobot Create following these instructions:

Powering a Kinect on an iRobot Create

In the instructions, a homemade 12V regulator is used. I have a few SMPS2Dynamixel adapters lying around. Would one of these provide the required regulation for the Kinect if I hook one up to the Create's 12V battery? And if so, is it rated at at least 1A?

    Thanks!

The SMPS doesn't have a regulator -- it's just got a couple capacitors and an LED.

Thanks Fergs. I was just rummaging around in one of my boxes of parts and found a DC-DC regulated converter that was designed for a car cigarette lighter. I'm guessing this would be more along the right lines? (It's rated at 1200ma.)

Honestly, a $1.50 LM7812 (available at radio shack) supplies more than enough current. I'd have to say the Kinect probably averages less than an amp, unless you run that really crappy tilt motor.

Since my soldering skills are pathetic, I was hoping to avoid getting out the iron, but I may give it a try anyway. At $1.50 per botch, I can afford a little more practice...And no, I won't be using the Kinect's tilt motor--in fact, I already disconnected it.

Don't forget to add some caps to that regulator!

I believe the tutorial on ROS.org does specify caps and such....

Thanks--I would follow the instructions shown here which includes the capacitors.
