Thread: Servo Torque required for Biped and Quadraped

  1. Servo Torque required for Biped and Quadraped

I was just wondering what is the minimum servo torque you'd recommend using for a biped and for a quadraped?

    All of it.

Um,..... just in case you weren't sure, posting the same question in multiple threads on the same forum is A BIT LIKE USING CAPSLOCK ALL THE TIME.
I agree with what jwatte said...... in the other thread...... to the same question.
Further to that though, the bipeds with AX-12 servos can only carry a few hundred grams of mech warfare gear before they get overloaded just by walking about. Add a pellet gun & a camera to a biped & you are pretty much at your limit.

Torque does not have a set minimum for the bipeds and the quads, just a recommended one, which is higher than AX-12's can put out. For M-O I am using 51 oz-in hobby servos, but that's not very much torque, so I don't know how it will work out.

The Bioloid Comprehensive and Premium kits both feature quite functional bipeds and quads, so I'd say the AX-12 has enough torque. It's been proven at every Mechwarfare event (and clones) that AX-12's can be used to build competitive quadrupeds. We have yet to see an AX-12 based biped that can merit that, but it should technically be possible.

Having enough or required torque totally depends on what the purpose of said biped/quadruped is. I don't doubt it's possible make a biped with 51oz-in hobby servos, but would love know how you'd plan to make a Mech that can qualify for a Mechwarfare (or Mechwarfare like) event with that setup. I don't think balsa wood or foam board will hold up for more than a few hits from the AEGs that are all the rage with the kids these days.

If all we're concerning ourselves is having a biped and/or a quadruped that can walk around, then your limit is dependant upon what you plan to use as building materials. There was a guy at robogames last year with a functional biped made with popsicle sticks and micro servos. If we're talking mechwarfare, then using anything less than an AX-12 is an attempt to either show off some remarkable engineering skills or embarrass yourself.

    Cheers!

I wasn't aware I had done this? I asked in this thread what servo torque is recommended for a biped and a quadraped for mechwarfare and in the other thread I asked what servo torque is recommended for a hexapod NOT for mechwarfare. I realise the mechwarfare payload will increase requirements.

Yeah I realise there isn't a required minimum as such, I just phrased it badly! I meant what is the minimum torque you guys would go for? So you're saying above 16.5 Kg-Cm? (I assume you run the AX12's at 12v?). Thanks for your help.

Re: Servo Torque required for Biped and Quadraped

I ran the numbers on the AX, was somewhat concerned about what I saw, and conservatively stepped up to MX servos (at considerable cost.)

Mind you, M-O is tiny compared to most other bipeds. He's based off of the Mechwarrior flea, or the Star Wars AT-ST "Chicken Walker" depending on what camp you're in mech wise. Both of which are small and light.

So the real question is: how much will your 'bot NEED, not what is the minimum required to get it to walk.

I suggest at least AX-12s for a Quad, something stronger is usually needed for a Biped.

AND DON'T FOLLOW MY EXAMPLE WITH M-O!!
