Yep I know, and that's why we can't have (other) nice things (from third parties). They sell it for less than the 100 Pcs BOM cost... :/
Anyway, they own the market and it's their own ecosystem. Whatever.

Really. On the one hand, as a consumer, I think it's great!
On the other hand, I got a bid from a Chinese board stuffing place, and they want $500 for qty 20 (this includes parts and PCBs, though) for the gun board.
Here's the kicker: They are "too busy to run tests" so they would not quote my indicated test procedure (which was pretty much "hook up this rig I send to you, program the MCU, wave a piece of paper in front of the sensor, see the light turn green...)
Yeah, I think I'll go somewhere else...

    Hi,

I am very interrested by your board.
I also play with the Lidar since few month now, and it is exactly what I needed.
Let me know if you still selling it.

    Nice Job.

    Hey,

I received the boards a few days ago, and the components and stencil are somewhere between their origin an my house

Maybe I'll have a hundred made in about a month [probably of the USB2LDS v2.0, but maybe of the Neato LDS Breakout board too... this one should be quite cheaper] (that should meet the demand for a few years ), but I'll be happy to send you a few at cost to beta testers. PM me

  5. Re: USB2LDS - a lightweight USB interface for the Neato Laser Distance Sensor (LDS, aka the lidar of the XV-11)

    Quick update:

I have assembled and tested the NeatoLDS Breakout Board (NLDSBB) and assembled one USB2LDS. There are some little mistakes here and there (a PMOS that should have been NMOS, and the fact that the ATTiny cannot reliably operate the USART at the baud rate... which a few seconds of reading of the datasheet would have revealed that the +-10% of the internal oscillator are just not that great, all the more when cumulated with the 3.5% of error in the baud rate at 115200bps).

I added an oscillator (16MHz crystal, a little overclocked for that voltage) to the NLDSBB and developped the code that parses the stream to extract the speed (with checksum verif). Behind that I put a very simple P controller that manages to get the turn rate around the value it should.
The code for the USB2LDS will be mostly the same, with the additional CDC/ACM serial port code.

Tomorrow's mission is to release stuff (code, eagle files, doc etc).

Here is the link to what I have right now : https://github.com/Xevel/usb2lds

I have kind of shelved the project for now, due to the Great ATmegaXXu2 Drought of 2014 :/
Seems like the only ones I have access to are ATmega32u2-MUR and these are much more expensive. I think I'll just put an order for a few anyway.
Everything else is either dried up or inaccessible, and 16u2 are in a similar state...

I have assembled one of the USB2LDS but haven't ported the firmware yet. Also I realized I inadvertently implemented a PID that only has the integral part... with a system that takes a long time to react, it's just a _bad_ way to do it ^^'

Looks like they have upgraded the Wanderer in the V2.6.15 of the Neato LDS firmware

The firmware is now in a usable form.
There's a setup mode that makes it possible to tune the PID live with keyboard commands (very useful if you use the alternate power input for the motor).

I have ordered some 32u2 on digikey - these ones come in tape, that's the only difference with the less expensive ones that comes in trays - to make a few more boards.

    Can usb2lds be purchased?

P.s. I only recently became interested in a simple interface between xv11 lidar and computer and found whole bunch of stuff you have done for neato lidar comunity from hacking to interfacing. Thank you for such a great work!

    Hey oddy,

Sure I have a few PCbs and the necessary parts for maybe up to 7 or 8 boards (shared components inventory with other projects), and can sell you one. However it's currently considered in development - I have tested succinctly the hardware and developed a simple firmware that needs to be a little bit refined and documented. The basic use case (= powered by USB, default PID settings) works as expected, I haven't tested with external power for the LDS yet.

For this prototype version, let's say $25/board + $15 for international shipping - that's barely more than the cumulated cost of parts, PCBs, shipping and Paypal fee. PM me if you're interested.
