Thread: Tracks tracks and more tracks!

    Tracks tracks and more tracks!

Thought I would grab a thread here at Trossen and show some of the work I've been doing. As you can see I like tracks. Wheels are good but a robot with tracks just looks cool. Plus the tracks offer the go anywhere ability once the robot is out of the garage and out in the real world. I tend to over due the power end of it. 42mm planetary motors are my current favorite and give lots of power for the size robots I build.
Most of my robots run the Basic Stamp. I've recently discovered the Arbotix and have been really interested in the things it can do. Namely the Dynamixel support. I'd like to swap out the controllers in many of my robots for the Arbotix-m.
    More to come!

That's a lot of tracks! And a lot of projects. And they all look wonderful, though I suspect that the one in "almost done.jpg" isn't finished yet.

where do you get your treads? I'm thinking about making some once my printer arrives - I've been told Real Soon Now! Making treads will give me an excuse to make some more smaller bots that use them. I wonder if I could make an anti-mouse-mouse? (We have a slight mouse problem in our house now.)

So, the one with the 42mm motor and planetary gearhead is the "almost done" version?
Also: Good to see someone else using a Tormach PCNC :-)

Might I ask where you get your motors?

A little learning is a dangerous thing.

I bought a box full of the 42mm planetary motors from a seller on ebay who purchased them from Superdroids and never used them. I also watch for large lots of Pittman motors on ebay with good useable ratios. My last Pittman motor purchase was just over 30 identical motors.

Does anything small you've tried work particularly well outdoors? Thanks for sharing all that. I've got treads ready to use that I've yet to use for a few years now =-x

The Lynxmotion tracks work well up to a point. If the robot is very heavy, they leave a bit to be desired. They are injection molded plastic with vulcanized rubber after all. That being said, I've had really good luck with them. The three inch versions are really nice but require you to source 2.5" aluminum standoffs as LM doesn't carry them.

The snow blower tracks seem really cool also. I've purchased a set along with some 4 pole wheel chair motors to build a bigger bot. Someday I'll get around to that project!
If you've got a particular design in mind, I'd be glad to help you cnc the plates to make it work.

Got the new Arbotix-M boards today. Now I just have to choose which bot to install it in.....
