  1. Arbotix-M with 6 AX-12A and a gyroscope + PC interface - Feasible?

    Hi,

    I'm working on my first robot, and the field is reeling me in big time!

    We're building a neck + stereo vision bot with complete pan/tilt capabilities for both eyes and the neck.

    We're going with AX-12A servos and the Arbotix-M. There's probably going to be a gyroscope somewhere in the neck.

    We'll need to interface with a computer to control the servos based on input from the camera, I'm going to say this will be through a USB interface to the Arbotix-M.

    The PC will also have to record the position values from each of the Dynamixel servos.

    Is this a feasible system?

    If the Arbotix-M is powered by a 12V 5A supply, will it be sufficient power to drive all the servos and the gyro?

    Yes, that sounds feasible. 5A is probably OK for that assembly. If you really worry, then either put a couple of 4700 uF 16V rated capacitors in parallel, or make it parallel/float a 12V battery.

    You don't necessarily need an Arbotix M with this setup. The PC could do everything.

    The ax-12's are rated at 900ma, max. Assuming you have 6, that's 5.4A, full on. Plus the Arbotix, etc. I'd go to a 10A supply. I've learned my lesson on this - I was trying to run a hexapod (18 servos) on a 10A supply. I finally figured out the servos were seeing a low-voltage condition and locking up.

    And I'd use both the Arbotix-M and your PC. The Arbotix can handle the heavy servo communications load, leaving your PC to do useful stuff...

    I'm going with the 10A supply and using the Arbotix for servo comms, PC for processing other things.
