What have I been up to lately?

Such a big question to answer since there's been a lot going on and a while since I've taken some time to reflect.

Some months ago there was talk about making it to the 2016 IRC in Korea and even some robot preparation but as big plans go sometimes it didn't work out. It was going to be quite a journey and I'm not sure I'd have been allowed to participate in the "intelligence" missions which is all I really cared about.

After IRC I received an old CubeX printer.. the one with up to 3 extruders and a 12" build platform... and and and.. proprietary closed source firmware. I love that kind the most! So I ripped out all the parts that I couldn't work with and upgraded it with an open source Duet controller, heated bed, E3D hotend, IR probe, etc. Other than being a little on the slower side and troubles keeping the big build plate flat it's a pretty sturdy printer now.

About mid way through the printer upgrades I got a call to help Trossen with some work and have been working on RobotGeek and Interbotix projects. Now I'm working on projects in my on and off time You'd think one could get burned out that way but I love it. For a few months I made code contributions to RobotGeek projects as well as created a few of my own.

Some may know of Chip-E, he's a 3D printable robot kit from robotgeek.com. I started working on the design as a project to cheer me up and later found he brings a little joy to almost everyone. Now he's been made available as a kit to anyone who'd like to build their own and even featured on the cover of Make magazine!

I also have a couple more 3D printable projects that will be released as soon as a few little bits are sorted out. There is a mini hovercraft that I've shown on my instagram account and a water blaster that you can make at home.

These usually surprise someone when they first try it because it's pretty powerful. Very few parts and easy to print. Charge up the internal battery pack and screw on a full water bottle and you are ready to go.

What about Timmy you ask? He hasn't been getting as much direct attention as he's been accustomed to but he's been around "helping" me work on other ROS projects. The work I'm doing is beneficial to my ROS skillset and some will carry over to enhance Timmy's development when I get back to humanoids. In particular object manipulation and cooperative exploration but I'm sure much more will come as things continue.

In my off time I'm still taking it to the skies with my FPV quads, printing random things, checking out particle accelerators, watching the CNC, playing ROV and maybe enjoying a little VR when the opportunity arises.

    Hello r3n33,
I can't compete with the particle accelerator (that's awesome ) but here you have a 1080 60fps 3D system on my quad with Sony HMZ or OSVR VR ( with special lenses ) headset under 33ms latency

That looks awesome! HD and 3D video while flying has got to be pretty amazing. What size frame do you need for that kind of payload and what kind of flight time do you get? Normally I like to fly my 130 but also play with quads/tricopters up to 600mm in size. It'd be neat to see some video from your setup if you have any.

Hah thanks jwatte but it isn't all free time. Sometimes it's work time too but I'll admit they can be hard to distinguish every now and again.

    Great projects R3n33!
At first Chip-E didn't look that impressive until I saw a video of it moving around sideways in a very fluid wave-motion, beautifully!

    Hi r3n33,

I used to fly a custom controller with my own code, but now, for analog FPV I use something very small The Atom V2, with 3" inch props, I don't break props so often ( yihaaa ) and it's like a rocket. Camera can be better but on that size...

Regarding to the HD system, it's an expensive setup. The frame it's 333mm and you can use 6,7,8" props ( depending on what motor combo, how much battery life do you expect and how much punch do you want ), it's arms are foldable. Armattan FPV Tilt frame is the base but I made some custom parts. The payload necessary is only to carry the HD Connex system transmitter and 3D camera, 170g or so, I haven't tried the mini, I use the big/original HD connex. I usually run the system in full quality 1080-3060fps and if you compare the video with a gopro live feed it's almost the same. When I want to go wild I use 720p60 and improve the obstacle penetration and cluttering on very fast turns. The Sony HMZ T2 have a very good 3D but they are selling a new glyph ( I don't know if they have 3D capabilities ). You can use also a Razer OSVR putting special lenses to the camera to have a more VR/ immersive experience but you must use it on 1080 at low speeds, 720 resolution on such big FOV it's not pretty.

The problem? When I go with friends/family to do some FPV it's like seeing star wars on my headset and they can't understand, So lately I've been carrying a 3D TV with me to my FPV sessions.

Now they are selling a new system, an special version for FPV and also their own drone, with 720p60 ( Prosight ), much much smaller and more convenient but its quality ( besides the lower resolution ) it's not comparable, it's a lot better than analog but it's not like "real 720p". Their camera really is crap, tons of jello, and captures on 30fps, the signal is processed to obtain something more smoother and converted to 60fps. The quality of de video measured in PSNR is a lot lower so it's not really 720p, so they reduce the bandwidth necessary to improve the performance in terms of robustness.

I don't have 3D footage because it requires an special ( expensive ) recorder but you can check it some videos and the camera creator setup http://emrlabs.ca/shop/index.php?mai...products_id=16

The quality on the screen/vimeo isn't the same, but if you have an 3D headset you can see something like that.

Thx. Chip-E is a simple bot but the combination of the robotgeek servos and the smooth oscillations do bring it to life. At some point it would be fun to see an alternate shell made or even enhancements to the existing design.

OH yes I know the atom.. looks like a nice little frame. I don't break props too often either but when I do it's usually cause I'm trying to fly too fast. I think DALs are really nice but when you get to the 3" size they don't go back into place well and cause a lot of vibration.. or even just explode off mid-flight (yep).

About 5 years ago I worked on a full flight controller system as well. Hardware, firmware, software with more sensors and capabilities than I care to admit. Now a days there are so many options and the majority of them are super affordable. Hard to beat betaflight on a 20-30$ Naze board if you just wanna fly/race around on a budget.

The 3D video looked awesome. I imagine it'd be most fun for exploration and a little less helpful up high when everything is at a distance. Cool stuff
