Honorablemention A Bug Bot that scares away the bogie man

This is a boe-bot I made for my daughter. It Is a standard boe-bot and homework board with the crawler kit and the ping))) kit. I also added a red wide spectrum laser light. Basically what is dose is wander around and shine its red beam in the darkest areas of the room. My daughter is 6 years old and is going threw the scared of the dark phase. So I made this bot to look like a cute bug and shine light in the dark areas of her room while it wanders, and make my daughter feel like she is not in the room alone. Needles to say she loves it...lol

Parts:
1 Parallax boe-bot kit
1 Parallax crawler kit
1 Ping))) sensor kit
1 Parallax homework board
1 laser pointer
1 wide spectrum lens
1 light filter
5 ni cad rechargeable batteries
1 9v battery
1 can of black spray paint
1 can of purple spay paint
1 mounting kit (made my self) the red beam and servo.
Estimated cost $300

Re: A Bug Bot that scares away the bogie man

This. Is. Awesome.

What a great idea! A useful application on top of being a fun way to teach your daughter about technology. There are a lot of organizations out there that are looking for ways to get more young girls excited about technology that would love to see this. (the Girl Scouts for one.)

You should think about sending this over to a few of those organizations. They might do stories on it.

Thanks for the submission!

Re: A Bug Bot that scares away the bogie man

I do allot of work with The Museum of Science and Technology, local schools and collages. I try to raise as much interest as I can for the robotics field. Kids seem to really love robotics. My daughter actually helps me build them. She screws in allot of the nuts and bolts and I show her how to bread board the wires and things like that. She is in the first grade and will be bringing 4 of her robots to show and tell. Its kind of funny you mentioned the girl scouts. My wife and I just finished filling out the paper work for her to join the brownies..lol

She's bringing in 4 robots to show and tell? She's totally gonna be the coolest kid in class

Great to hear about all your effort in getting the younger generation more interested in and involved with robotics!
