There were actually some cool robots at SIGGRAPH in the tech demo area. Here's some crappy pictures I got with my phone.
UMASS Amherst had a couple of their robots there. This is
uBot-5 rolling about under remote control.
I don't recall the name of this bot, but it was basically a uBot chassis with training wheels, plus fingers and a huge plastic head. It looked around and blinked. (Sorry for the halo-like effect; it was in a shaft of sunlight and the phone couldn't dial down enough to avoid blowing out.)
This thing looked awesome -- I wish I had a better picture but it was incredibly dark. It's a pair of robot arms with 5-fingered hands which the operator controls using a touch-sensitive input device. The arm actuation all appeared to be pneumatic (you can kind-of see the tubing). The invention was ostensibly the input device, but the arms were super cool. Too bad they didn't work for squat.
