Robots at SIGGRAPH 2008

There were actually some cool robots at SIGGRAPH in the tech demo area. Here's some crappy pictures I got with my phone.

UMASS Amherst had a couple of their robots there. This is uBot-5 rolling about under remote control.

I don't recall the name of this bot, but it was basically a uBot chassis with training wheels, plus fingers and a huge plastic head. It looked around and blinked. (Sorry for the halo-like effect; it was in a shaft of sunlight and the phone couldn't dial down enough to avoid blowing out.)

This thing looked awesome -- I wish I had a better picture but it was incredibly dark. It's a pair of robot arms with 5-fingered hands which the operator controls using a touch-sensitive input device. The arm actuation all appeared to be pneumatic (you can kind-of see the tubing). The invention was ostensibly the input device, but the arms were super cool. Too bad they didn't work for squat.

I have a couple of videos that I'll try to upload as well.

I love the middle shot metaform3d, Great pics. The head and arms look cool.

Re: Robots at SIGGRAPH 2008

Here's uBot-5 getting pushed around. I really think they shouldn't tease the robot!

These were PaPeRo robots that had been modified with touch sensors in various places. They would trigger behaviors like rotating the head, moving forward, smiling, etc. Doing it that way made it much easier for kids to program sequences.

The staff had a humanoid robot answering questions and generally harassing people. The operator could see people and talk to them with a weird modulated voice through a hinged jaw that seemed to be keying off the speech. Here it's pointing out the registration area.
